How do you get a Division I basketball scholarship?
About 1.1% of high school players reach Division I, and the players who get there combine skill, strong academics, active recruiting outreach, and good character.

How hard is it, honestly?
About 1.1% of high school players reach Division I basketball. Roughly 3.6% play at any NCAA level. Those numbers come from NCAA research, as reported by Pro Skills Basketball. No source we reviewed publishes the exact number of D1 roster spots available each year, so we cannot give you that figure.
What coaches are looking for
According to Florida Coastal Prep, coaches evaluate skill, basketball IQ, character, and academics. A weakness in any one of those areas can end the path. The same source notes that full D1 scholarships go to roughly 1% of high school boys basketball players.
The recruiting process is not passive
PGC Basketball describes a "Do It Yourself Recruiting Strategy." The core idea: coaches will not simply find your player. Your player needs to take active steps. PGC Basketball lists three starting questions for identifying target schools: what level can your player compete at, what do they want to study, and where do they want to live. Pro Skills Basketball adds that recruiting is now a year-round job for both the player and the family.
D1 is not the only scholarship path
Florida Coastal Prep reports that the NAIA has over 250 member schools offering athletic scholarships, and that there are more than 500 JUCO programs across the country. Pro Skills Basketball lists D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO as real basketball pathways worth understanding. Our sources do not detail the scholarship rules for each of those levels.
What our database adds
Depth Chart holds records on 39,620 high school players linked to the college programs they actually reached. The sources reviewed here do not specify which high school profiles, events, or measurables most often correlate with D1 offers. That is a gap our database is built to address, but this page does not yet draw on those records to answer it.
